"That Hideous Strength"

"It is incredible how little this knowledge moved him. It could not, because he had long ceased to believe in knowledge itself. What had been in his far-off youth a merely aesthetic repugnance to realities that were crude or vulgar, had deepened and darkened, year after year, into a fixed refusal of everything that was in any degree other than himself. He had passed from Regel into Hume, thence through Pragmatism, and thence through logical Positivism, and out at last into the complete void. The indicative mood now corresponded to no thought that his mind could entertain. He had willed with his whole heart that there should be no reality and no truth, and now even the imminence of his own ruin could not wake him. The last scene of Dr. Faustus where the man raves and implores on the edge of Hell is, perhaps, stage fire. The last moments before damnation are not often so dramatic. Often the man knows with perfect clarity that some still possible action of his own will could yet save him. But he cannot make this knowledge real to himself. Some tiny habitual sensuality, some resentment too trivial to waste on a blue-bottle, the indulgence of some fatal lethargy, seems to him at that moment more important than the choice between total joy and total destruction. With eyes wide open, seeing that the endless terror is just about to begin and yet (for the moment) unable to feel terrified, he watches passively, not moving a finger for his own rescue, while the last links with joy and reason are severed, and drowsily sees the trap close upon his soul. So full of sleep are they at the time when they leave the right way." - from That Hideous Strength by C.S. Lewis. I just finished reading this book, which is the third and final book in C.S. Lewis' Space Trilogy. In my opinion is was the best novel in the trilogy. The quote listed above has been bouncing around in my mind since putting the book down. It seems that the venerable Mister Lewis has, again, nailed one the elements that ails the modern mind and soul. Spiritual lethargy is a soul killer.

State of Philosophy

I am currently reading Kierkegaard and the Catholic Tradition by Jack Mulder Jr. Kierkegaard's writings have always interested me and, since I am a convert to Catholicism, I suspected this book would be a good read. I was correct. The author, who is also a convert to Catholicism has made a valuable contribution to religious philosophy. On a side note, can there really be a Philosophy that is not Theistic to some degree? It seems to be that in order to be a lover of wisdom one must acknowledge that true wisdom actually exists. Otherwise, all else that masquerades as "philosophy" is mere speculation used to justify ones' desires, similar to the Sophists of early Greek philosophy. Herein lies one of the reasons why I appreciate Kierkegaard writings. He seems to be able to cut right to the heart of what it means to be a disciple of Christ. For example, he said "That God could create beings free over against himself is the cross that philosophy could not bear but upon which it has remained hanging" . As a Catholic, I understand that his writings are not to be taken without some reservations. However, I think that Kierkegaard can speak to our modern secular, hedonistic world in a manner similar C.S. Lewis' post-mortem proselytizing catholicism (notice the little c) to protestants. Kierkegaard is something like the protestant Blaise Pascal, in my opinion. Anyway, the book mentioned above the worth the read and I recommend it.

A Primer in Philosophy from Dr. Peter Kreeft

Everyone should have a look at Dr. Peter Kreeft's audio files. I, particularly recommend the lectures "A Refutation of Moral Relativism" and "Pro-life Philosophy". Additionaly, I recommend that everyone subscribe to Dr. Kreeft's podcast on iTunes. There is much to think about here.

I came across a great book by James Kalb. "The Tyranny of Liberalism" is discussion about modern liberalism and its' intrinsically totalitarian nature. Liberalism, like atheism, is practically and logically untenable. This may not be news to most, but there is a culture war taking place and this book can be part of your intellectual arsenal against the on-rushing hoard of nihilist who want to destroy western civilization. Read it!

Bastardization of the Theological Virtues

While reading another great book by J. Budziszewski, "The Revenge of Conscience: Politics and the Fall of Man", I came across a wonderful articulation of what I will call a bastardization of the theological virtues. A monotheist, who has not yet joined the Catholic Church, I have always wondered why most Catholics that I dialogue with seem to be so out of touch with the official Church teachings. The author cut right to the core of this problem with the following paragraph.

"Christian laxness bears some responsibility for the advent of perfectionism. For instance, today's believer does not often hear that Love is a disposition of will toward good, Faith a disposition of reason toward revealed truth, and Hope a disposition of longing toward Heaven. Once he has followed nonbelievers in using the first word for an emotion and the second for something inimical to reason, there is nothing much to stop him from using the third for complacency about the course of this present, broken world."

I applaud Mr. Budziszewski for attempting to turn on a light, instead of cursing the darkness. I highly recommend this book to all.

Michelle Malkin (may God bless her) has been together an illustrated guide of Leftist Hatred. I wonder if NBC & CNN will notice this.

There Be Dragons trailer

Timeless Wisdom from St. Augustine of Hippo

"Heretics are those who entertain in Christ’s Church unsound and distorted ideas and stubbornly refuse, even when warned, to return to what is sound and right, to correct their contagious and death-dealing doctrines, but go on defending them. When they leave the Church they are ranked as enemies who try her patience. Even so, their evil-doing profits the loyal Catholic members of Christ’s Body, for God makes good use of bad men, while ‘for those who love God all things work together unto good.’ (Rom 8:28) Actually, all foes of the Church, whether blinded by error or moved by malice, subserve her in some fashion. If they have power to do her physical harm, they develop her power to suffer; if they oppose her intellectually, they bring out her wisdom; since she must love even her enemies, her loving kindness is made manifest; and whether she has to deal with them in the persuasiveness of argument or the chastisement of law, they bring into play her power to do good. (St. Augustine, The City of God, XVIII, 51)"
